Culture, spain and change

Last night I watched Rick Steins cookery programme http://www.rickstein.com/Rick-Steins-Spain.html and although I didnt like all of the food it got me to thinking.   Hahahahaha dont be too shocked that I think fromtime to time.  Where have all the local shops gone in the UK?  Maybe in a lot of towns/cities they are still there but here where I live they most certainly arent.  We now only have ONE butchers in the town centre and no fruit and veg shops other than the ones in the "ethnic part" where I go to.  We have no proper bread shops other than  hmmm "Greggs" either.  It is oh so sad.  Do they think that this town doesnt need them and that we can all go to the Supermarkets of which I may add we have loads and loads on the outskirts of the town, where the fruit and veg has been standing around in warehouses for ages.  I loved living in Spain when all I had to do is walk out of our apartment down the street and there would be lovely fruit and veg and bread and pastries and fish all in one street, plus the market on a friday.  Also there was a lovely chicken shop.... how they made the gravy that went with the chicken I have no idea but it was delicious and the small shop was always busy.  It just makes me mad that our ways here, well near to me, have changed so much, not only the food, but the manners of people and everything else.  Im not saying that everyone has no manners or anything but on the whole people have just changed so much here, what has happened to our culture?  People dont care about people anymore and consumerism has taken over and far too much. Its just so very sad I think.

It's one of the things I love about Turkey...the fact that we still have all these individual shops, and the markets of course. And everything tastes the way it should taste...unlike the genetically modified stuff you get in the UK
